While backstage at our private coaching client event in Palm Springs, we caught up with Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary is a social media expert, getting his start at his dad’s liquor store and made it to one of the first e-commerce wine businesses by utilizing digital media. He then started his own digital social agency growing it from 30 to 500 people in just 3 years. In this episode, Tom interviews Gary to find out what his take is on the future of digital media for real estate marketing.

Tom Ferry: Gary when you were on stage, the dominate topic was about team development and behavior today versus behavior later.

Gary Vaynerchuk: You know, it’s great to sell as many homes as you can this year, but for the team helping support you, is your behavior matched to being successful in 2015 and beyond? Are you going to invest time into your employees and really get to know their goals so they can support you in yours? We are seeing a lot of planning now for future gains. The same can be said about social. Whether you’re doing Facebook, Google, Twitter, Instagram, direct mail, radio, etc these are the new ways to communicate. More and more of the eyes are shifting and you need to adjust to stay relevant.

TF: What has you captivated right now?

GV: Podcast. With technology, smart cars, and bluetooth on their phones, people are listening to podcasts anywhere they want. I just did a radio ad campaign in December and it tanked. And I was okay with that because it now allows me to say compared to four years ago, these ads didn’t even come remotely close. The eyes and ears have shifted from radio to Spotify and iTunes. So, will you be hedging for the eyes and the ears of 2016 and 2017, or are you just pumped that your back-end telemarketing or landing pages is doing enough for you? It’s really what I said on stage, are you willing to be the person who puts yourself out of business?

TF: Bingo. I want to go back to being focused on today’s behaviors or future behaviors. A lot of people are asking me “what CRM should I use?” and my response is “who cares what CRM you’re using. Call your people, have a conversation, build a great relationship with them.

GV: Exactly. Excel and Google Docs is plenty good for 97% of you. People want to spend money on tools to justify that they’re actually doing the thing. I don’t care about the tool. You’ve got a screwdriver. Cool. Now what? What are you going to do with it?

TF: Where would you hedge right now, if you’re in the real estate business for buyers and sellers today and the future?

GV: I think short-form video. There’s more distribution channels for it now–Instagram and Vine. I just saw the Twitter new ad product for their video and their native video product. It’s going to really work. I want you to understand that whatever money or time you allocate to digital media is about you making money in 2017, not this year.

TF: Let’s talk about Instagram as a tool, but it’s really hot right now and not a lot of people have notice the advertising potential.

GV: Yes, Instagram is the fastest growing social network out there and it has everyone’s attention. Your ROI is greater there with it’s 300 million users. And if you understand what native advertising is and can innately take a picture of the sunset that your current listing has–you can really leverage this media. You gotta keep it fun when you join Instagram, especially if you want people on the network to dig your business. They don’t take too kindly to the salesy type.

So on today’s Social Thursday we’re talking about some fun and, more importantly, acceptable ways to market your business on Instagram.

5 Ways to Market Your Business on Instagram:

If you’re selling a product, definitely show off the process of how it’s coming to life. Take a picture of the behind-the-scenes development that customers wouldn’t otherwise know about or see. This is a great way to make them feel more connected to yoru brand and the product, making them think more about buying.

Always take the opportunity to show off a happy customer. Maybe they’re happy to jump in front of the camera for you, or you just snapped a pictured of their thankful online review. Testimonials are fun for your audience when it’s less of you talking about yourself and more proof that you’re making people happy.

Give some love to the faces of those who are helping to make you a success! Whether it’s your employees or partners you’re working with for certain projects. An audience loves to see the people who are coming up with great ideas so show them off!

If your work takes you out and about, either in your city or far far away, post pictures of the scenery as you’re experiencing it. Many people love the idea of travel, especially when it’s your work that present the opportunity. Let them live vicariously through you!

And if you want any of these ideas and your photos to work in promoting your brand, you should definitely be engaging with hashtags on Instagram. There is so much opportunity to join conversations that are already happening so you can show you have something to share as well and open yourself up to a whole new group of people who could be interested in following and joining your audience. Look into what’s hot and in line with your content and join in!

Instagram may be a mobile social media platfrom, but is becoming one of the best tools for creating free leads for your business. We live in a visual world full of videos and pictures being shared every second of everyday and hardly anyone is actually turning that into business revenue.

Here are my top 25 Intagram marketing tips for business:

1. Make sure you have a good profile picture when creating your account. It should be a good shot of your face or your company’s brand.

2. Your username should be simple and memorable. Whether you are using Instagram to market your own brand or your company, use that name in your username.

3. Take the time to write a good description for your profile. Talk about what you do or your company does, and also keep it casual and maybe mention some your hobbies as well.

4. One of the most important parts of marketing on social media sites like Instagram, is having your link present. Whether you want interested people to go to a blog, capture page, etc., have that in your profile for them to easily go to.

5. The results come with consistency. Post at least one picture a day if you are really committed to getting results with this platform. You never know when the perfect prospects will see your posts.

6. Make proper use of #hashtags in your Instagram post descriptions. Use as many popular and related hashtags as possible to get as many eyeballs on your pictures as possible.

7. Tie your social media profiles together to create a movement. Connect your Instagram to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr to be able to post on 4 different sites at the same time and drive massive amounts of traffic.

8. People hate spam! Don’t even think about posting on this site if all you’re going to do is talk about you and making money. Add some value to your posts!

9. There are many apps that can really help you manage your account. One of my favorite ones is Followers+. It will help you see the popularity of your account and who is and isn’t following you back.

10. Get the Follow Mate app as well. This will help you really manage your followers and find new people to connect with in a much easier way.

11. Download the Instaquote app. This will help you edit pictures before posting them, so you can add quotes, comments, branding, url’s, etc.

12. Since you can’t actually put active links in the description of Instagram posts and make them clickable for people, put the URL you want them to go to clearly on the picture itself. This will help with traffic and lead conversions.

13. One way to build a larger audience on this app is to follow people everyday. Specifically, I would recommend following around 50 people per day and then using apps like Follow Mate and Followers+ to manage who connects with you and who doesn’t. Don’t follow a lot of people that aren’t interested in following you back. Use the apps to unfollow those people once or twice a week.
